School

The school of Ember schools all the children in the city except the ones who are too young or too sick to attend. The ages and forms are usually like this:

1st form: 7 years

2nd form: 8 years

3rd form: 9 years

4th form: 10 years

5th form: 11 years

6th form: 12 years

7th form: 13 years

8th form: 14+ years

When everyone passes the eighth form, they have Assignment Day, where they draw their future position out of a hat.

Join the City

Once upon a time, a great war was looming on the horizon. The scientists and leaders built Ember, a huge, underground city. They provided instructions for the future inhabitants, to be kept in a box for 200 years until it would open itself. Hopefully by then the war would be over. Volunteers to go into the city would raise their children with no knowledge of the world above, but when the time came, they would return to the surface. But the box was lost somewhere along the way, and it is now the year 241 of the City of Ember.
